Of course, if you're concerned about your switchboard, it's always best to consult an expert. But at least now you know a little bit more about this important safety measure.

5 Switchboard Safety Tips

Here are five things that can make your electrical switchboard operate safely:

1
Flickering lights

Flickering lights is usually an early sign that something is not right. You may think your house is possessed, but it could be that you have a faulty switchboard which needs to be replaced.

2
Regular inspections

Regular inspections and maintenance of your switchboard can keep it healthy and functional for a long time. Getting your switchboard inspected once a year is a good idea.

3
Circuit breakers

Circuit breakers trip when too much current is being drawn through the system, usually when too many appliances are in use at the same time. This prevents overloading, which could cause damage to wires or even fires.

4
Safety switches (RCDs)

Residual Current Devices (RCDs), more commonly just called safety switches, protect you from electric shocks by tripping when an electric leak is detected, shutting off the power supply.

5
Arc Fault Protection Drive (AFPD)

A circuit that sees prolonged use may sometimes cause electric arcing, which is known to melt metal and start fires. AFPD puts a stop to this phenomenon.

6
Surge protector

Lightning strikes and other random events can sometimes cause abnormal jumps in the flow of electricity, known as a “surge”. These high voltage surges can damage appliances and even cause fires if nothing mitigates them. A surge protector protects your electrical system from these events.

Switchboards Installation FAQs

Book Online Now Call Us | 1300 571 758

There are a number of considerations when you are installing a switchboard. Once our ASSA technicians arrive onsite they can assess your home and provide guidance on the space and advise on approach. Each installation has the below considerations.

  1. First and most obvious consideration is the space.
  2. The space also needs to be protected from the elements, such as wind, water and heat.
  3. Size of the board and accessibility
  4. Cost of the switchboard. This will depend on the occupants and size of the home.

On average, a complete switchboard upgrade should take about anywhere from a few hours to a day or two for commercial facilities. This will also depend upon availability of parts. Rest assured that our technicians work as quickly as possible on any job; also, we charge by the job, not the hour!

Any switchboard older than 25 years should be replaced as soon as possible. If there is no date label on the switchboard, chances are that it is quite old already and should be replaced.
